Hey I love WIzard. I put a lot of stock in their Hot 10 lists for example.
In all seriousness, it is what it is. It gives its audience what it wants. I think a lot of the arguments against it are similiar to people's arguments against the over-exposure of Wolverine. Yeah, it's annoying... but only if you don't like it. If you're a fan, you're getting what you want.
Personally I don't read it for news. And I don't think it exists to provide news, because the websites have them scooped every time. I think its core competency is to keep a finger to the pulse of the industry, and for better or worse (in my opinion worse) the industry is ALL ABOUT Marvel and DC, and not just Marvel and DC, but pretty much Marvel and DC's top 5-10 properties exclusively.
That said I also like Comic Foundry. I like its voice. Unfortunately I'm afraid that as a magazine it reminds me of a really good independent comic. Or even a really good mainstream comic that doesn't have instantly recognizable characters. Unfortunately we know what happens to these books. I do like the magazine a lot though, and hope it does really well and think its success would be great for the industry.
The problem with the industry today is that you almost have to sell out to survive. Because today selling out means appealling to the lowest common denominator because appealing to any smaller bracket means not having the numbers TO survive.
If Wizard chose to halve their "mainstream" coverage and replace it with more niche coverage, more people would unfortunately drop the magazine than would pick it up. It's a simple business decision.
Here's something I will say about the Bendis Board community though. I don't think it provides an accurate cross-section of today's comic reading population. If it was, then Criminal would be in the Diamond Top 10, and Wolverine:Origins would be out of the Top 300. And Wizard would have a readership of 2, as opposed to being the most successful periodical covering the medium today.
